Chicago’s Streeterville

Streeterville is a popular neighborhood right next to Lake Michigan.

It is located east of the famous Magnificent Mile. Oak Street is the north boundary of Streeterville. This neighborhood doesn’t sit on a train line; however, the Red Line is nearby.

Streeterville may not be the fanciest or hippest neighborhood in terms of restaurants or real estate, but it does encompass some of Chicago’s best-known attractions.

Some of those attractions include the Navy Pier and the Museum of Contemporary Art. This neighborhood is close to Millennium Park, the Loop, and Merchandise Mart. 

Its History

Streeterville is named after George Streeter.

When his boat got stuck in shallow water in Lake Michigan, he claimed the nearby area as his own and rented out the land for public waste.

Wealthy neighbors took Streeter to court several times because he had no right to the land he claimed. Eventually, he had an army to protect his land from the actual landowners. In 1918, the court finally deemed he could not have ownership of the land. 

Soon after this decision, in 1921, George Streeter died, and the Michigan Avenue Bridge opened.

This neighborhood became the most sought-after real estate in the area, and many hotels, restaurants, and other stores were built within a few years.

After World War II, the area was revamped by Arthur Rubloff. When the Magnificent Mile was added during this project, it led to other landmarks being built like the John Hancock Center and Water Tower Place. 

Transportation

Streeterville is highly walkable and is close to the Red Line and Grand train stations.

The train stations are both ten minutes away from the southern or north end of Streeterville. This neighborhood can be easily accessed by using Chicago’s CTA bus system. 

Streeterville: Things to do

This area does have some upscale restaurants and shops, but it is not known for being high-end like other Chicago neighborhoods.

There are always plenty of activities, places to eat, and shops for clothing or food essentials. 

Activities and Shops

Besides the famous Navy Pier and Magnificent Mile, 360 Chicago is another popular destination for tourists.

You get to see the northern and eastern views of Chicago from the observation deck. Water Tower Place and the Shops at North Bridge are some of the biggest shopping malls in the area for any of your clothing needs. 

Restaurants

If you are looking for a place to start your morning right, Stan’s and Do-Rite are known for the best donuts in the area.

Stan’s focuses mainly on donuts and coffee, while Do-Rite is famous for its chicken.

Gino’s East is the place to go when you are looking for a classic Chicago-style pizza. It has been open since 1966 and is one of the oldest pizza restaurants in the city. 

Streeterville Real Estate

The high-rise condos and townhouses near the river are perfect for those wanting to be the lakefront attractions.

There are also historic buildings turned into apartments for those who want an apartment with character.
